Diverse artists share ideas with Perpich/metro students

Tom Kanthak's Arts and Ideas class at the Perpich Center Arts High School uses simple questions (a.k.a. Visual Thinking Strategies) to encourage deep thinking and discussion about what people see in art. "What I am trying to propose in this class is that we aren't talking about aesthetics as philosophy, but as a way to perceive our world through the senses," says Kanthak. Arts and Ideas gives students opportunities to research, identify, and discover the roots of their own aesthetic perspective.

On Friday mornings this semester a diverse line-up of guest artists and educators will share their insights and experiences with the class. Guest speakers include:
  • October 3: Judith Brin Ingber, dance scholar, writer, artistic director of "Voices of Sepharad"
  • October 10: Sun Yung Shin, writer, poet and Perpich Center teacher
  • October 24: Linda Saetre, director, actor, singer, special ed teacher at the Perpich Center

High school students and their teachers are invited to attend. Funding is available to assist with transportation. Interested educators should contact: Tom Kanthak, tom.kanthak@pcae.k12.mn.us, 763-591-4731. The Arts and Ideas Wiki has a curriculum outline, syllabus, and addition information about the class.
